Temecula to Holbrook

At 7 a.m., Rob and Daryl joined Doug and Marilyn Glenore in North Palm Springs to start on another automotive adventure. This would be a car lover's trip for 23 days, going cross-country and stopping at various automotive businesses and museums, with two major goals, being in Detroit for the Dream Cruise from Tuesday, August 16 through Saturday, August 20 and in Carlisle, PA for Corvettes at Carlisle from Thursday, August 25 through Saturday, August 27. Rather than just heading east on the 15 and then the 40, Doug thought it would be a better start to the trip to wind our way out of the Palm Springs area and through Twenty-Nine Palms and Amboy before joining I-40E about 165 miles later. The target for the night was Holbrook, AZ, about a 550 mile day to start off the trip. Due to our early start and the lack of traffic, we reached Kingman in the late morning, too early for a lunch stop and decided to push on to Seligman for tacos at the Sno-Cap. The weather was a very pleasant surprise as we had expected to feel the heat that had been so prevalent. We ended up eating outside and making pretty short work of way too many tacos. The counter guys who tell bad jokes must have been on vacation themselves, but nothing else had changed since the four of us had been there on the 2009 Caravan to Bowling Green. Rob and Daryl had had a refresher course with the Austrians on our June motorcycle trip. After lunch, we moved back onto the boring I-40 on the way to Holbrook. Most of our reservations for the trip were at Holiday Inn Express facilities or something of that level. This one was pretty new, had an elevator and a indoor pool, which we used. We had seen the mention of a local Italian restaurant, not part of a chain, in the AAA book and asked the desk manager if it was good. He vouched for it, so we drove up the road for a mile and had Italian food, served by Mona (who apparently knows Rick at the HIE and takes him meals in thanks for all the referrals.) We enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and Rob and Daryl had a $22 bottle of Little Black Dress red wine to celebrate the end of our first day. We parted that night with plans to leave around 7-7:30 the next day as we had another long day mapped out.
