Carlisle - Friday

This was Day One of the Corvettes at Carlisle. It was more exciting for Rob and Daryl and Doug and Marilyn as it was their first time. Leonard and Carol had been there a number of times so explained what we should expect and where we should go, etc. We left the Wyngate relatively early, but were definitely not the early birds when we arrived at the Carlisle Fairgrounds. We parked the cars on the Fun Field and set up our chairs. The women went to hunt down the goody bags, a fairly long walk away as it turns out. After that was done, Rob and Daryl started to walk the field. We had never seen so many cars for sale by owner or the number of folks who had 300 of some part they had brought in their truck and were trying to sell. The buyers who were not parked in the Fun Field and had just come as spectators had shopping carts to hold all their buys. We were able to pick up the shirts and Rob's jacket that we had purchased from Galli in Detroit and try some jackets for size so they could do Daryl's and ship it. The number of cars (5000) who had driven just like us, but maybe not so far, was amazing. They had a display of all the colors of blue (38 different blues) that they used on Corvettes over the last 30 years.

Pics DC1923-DC1931 are of a retro body on a current chassis.  The body resembles a '63 split window coupe, stretched and restyled to fit on a new (C6) frame.  Pics DC1939-DC1942 are of a body that resembles a '67 roadster.  Both ae made by Karl Kustom Corvettes, and you can see more of their work by clicking on the link.

As the day went on, there was more talk of rain, actually of Hurricane Irene. We could not imagine thousands of cars stuck in the mud and grass and all trying to get out at the same time, so we discussed alternative plans. Eventually we went back to the hotel and then decided to go to Outback in the truck. The hotel said they would not penalize us for leaving one day early, because it was caused by weather issues. By the time we had finished dinner, we were all set to leave the next morning. Leonard and Carol were going to visit his sister in Illinois and her son in Louisiana before heading home. We put all of the chairs in the back of their truck as we had no plans to got to another show. We found a point about halfway to Cincinnati, our Sunday night stay, Wheeling, WV and made reservations at a Hampton Inn there. We were going to take the scenic route and take our time.
